When visiting Fuzhou, China, add 三坊七巷 (Sanfang Qixiang) translated to Three Lanes Seven Alleys, to the agenda. (The name can’t get more original than that haha.) This area, while small packs a punch for its Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture. While doing research for this post, I was surprised to learn that numerous historical celebrities lived in this area of the port town.
I visited Fuzhou to attend a wedding and got a personal tour from extended family members. They were very excited to tell me all about the area (in Fujianese – a Fuzhou-based dialect). Before the recent modern development, an Uncle mentioned that because Fuzhou was hot during the summer, he and his friends would sleep in the middle of the street instead of indoors to catch the cool evening ocean breeze.
Since I had family as tour guides, they insisted on treating me to a stall selling fish balls, which were so delectable! The slippery dough skin blended with the fish chunks and savory juice that was perfect. I wish I had another chance to have some more! Since Fuzhou and Fujian Province is right on the water, enjoy all the seafood that they have to offer!
As this was my second time to China, I know and have witnessed the exponential growth that China has been experiencing over the years. Sanfang Qixiang is this well-preserved historical area that has this jarring juxtaposition next to vast construction sites and high rise buildings. While this area has maintained the architecture, the shops have a modern element with artificial lighting and air conditioning, selling typical touristy items and eats. Come for the architecture (and the fish balls!), checking out the alleys and lanes and looking at the statues that depict a sample of what life was like.
Happy travels!
